Free Wheelchair Mission in India

Introduction:

Disability affects millions of individuals across India and often creates significant barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. For many people with mobility impairments, the inability to move independently results in isolation, dependence on family members, loss of livelihood, and reduced quality of life. 

Approximately 2.68 crore (26.8 million) people in India live with disabilities, representing 2.21% of the country's population. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 defines a person with disability as someone with a long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairment that, when combined with social and environmental barriers, limits full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.

Mobility disabilities are among the most challenging forms of disability, particularly  for people living in rural and economically disadvantaged communities where access to assistive devices is limited. Without appropriate mobility support, many individuals are unable to attend school, seek employment, access healthcare services, or participate in community life.

Thousands of poor families cannot afford the cost of a quality wheelchair. As a result, many persons with disabilities remain confined to their homes and becomedependent on others for their daily activities.

Providing a wheelchair is not simply providing equipment—it restores dignity, independence, confidence, and opportunity. For many beneficiaries, receiving a wheelchair represents the beginning of a more independent and productive life.

Program Overview :

The Peoples Welfare Association (PWA) launched the national program called Free Wheelchairs Mission in India to improve the lives of poor persons with mobility disabilities by providing durable wheelchairs free of cost.

The program primarily serves economically weaker families who cannot afford assistive mobility devices. Through volunteer networks and district-level surveys, eligible beneficiaries are identified and provided with wheelchairs based on their mobility needs.

The program was implemented across States and districts  in India to reach the providing 3712  Free Wheelchairs to Disabled Individuals during  the year 2026

The mission seeks to restore mobility, dignity, independence, and social inclusion for persons with disabilities by ensuring that financial hardship does not prevent access to essential mobility support.

Beneficiary Identification Process

Before distribution, Peoples Welfare Association volunteers conduct field surveys to identify deserving beneficiaries.

● The selection process includes: 

○ Household visits.

○ Verification of disability status.

○ Assessment of economic conditions.

○ Medical recommendations where required.

○ Community verification.

○ Final approval by the district volunteer team.

● Priority is given to:

○ Poor families.

○ Children with disabilities.

○ Elderly persons with mobility limitations.

○ Individuals with permanent locomotor disabilities.

○ Persons living in remote rural areas.

Role of Volunteers

Dedicated volunteers play a crucial role in implementing the program.

● Their responsibilities include:

○ Conducting village and community surveys.

○ Identifying eligible beneficiaries.

○ Coordinating medical assessments where necessary.

○ Organizing wheelchair distribution camps.

○ Transporting wheelchairs to remote villages.

○ Assisting beneficiaries during distribution.

○ Providing basic wheelchair usage guidance.

○ Conducting follow-up visits.

● To support these activities, Peoples Welfare Association provides volunteers with:

○ Travel assistance

○ Accommodation during field visits

○ Food during program implementation

○ Honorarium for voluntary service

Wheelchair Distribution

The program provides wheelchairs completely free of cost to economically disadvantaged persons with disabilities.

● Each distribution aims to improve:

○ Personal mobility

○ Health and hygiene

○ Access to education

○ Employment opportunities

○ Community participation

○ Overall quality of life

The program particularly focuses on individuals who would otherwise remain confined to their homes due to financial constraints.
